Deep in the Transylvanian forests, an ancient Bear Cult has survived – here, Europe’s greatest land predator is a symbol of rebirth. Modern Romania has not lost its fascination with bears. It peaked under Ceausescu, in a breeding programme designed to satisfy the dictator’s hunting obsession. His regime is now history, but the bears are still there; and with ever-increasing numbers, conflict is unavoidable.
