Ski Dad
Norway, 2024
When we become parents, everything changes. We are no longer the center of the universe. Suddenly, there are small beings who are more important than ourselves, relying solely on us to take care of them.
But what happens when your passion is pushing the limits on skis, and taking risks is part of your job?
The film takes us on a personal journey with Asbjørn Eggebø Næss as he prepares to fulfill a dream line that has been on his mind for a long time, and is extremely challenging.
But what sets this film apart from many other ski movies is the focus on his role as a family man and how he handles the challenges that arise when embarking on demanding ski expeditions. The film targets a mature audience that may not resonate with the typical action narratives we usually see.
Asbjørn is a thoughtful individual, and he is the perfect narrator to explore the balance between taking risks and being a responsible parent as a professional extreme sports athlete. In the film, the climax is not just a significant risk taken and succeeded, but rather the moment when he has the opportunity to execute his line at the right time, with expertise and in accordance with the conditions.
We get to see a new side of Asbjørn in the film. There are flashbacks to the time when his children were born, and we also witness the challenges and frightening moments on skis where he faced serious consequences. What makes this film unique is the thoughtful reflections on life as a family man versus life as an extreme sports athlete. The premise is that even though things get more complicated when you become a parent, it doesn't mean you have to give up your passion. It's about finding a way to pursue your great passion without feeling like an irresponsible parent.
The film creates suspense through unique and gripping footage of Asbjørn's frightening accidents, where things could have gone very wrong. At the same time, it fosters identification by following Asbjørn in the role of a parent and captivates with beautiful images from the mountains of Møre and Romsdal, in Norway.
